Based on the famous 1970 coming-of-age book by adored author Judy Blume, ARE YOU THERE GOD? IT’S ME, The film MARGARET follows 11-year-old Margaret Simon (Abby Ryder Fortson) as her family relocates from Manhattan to the suburbs of New Jersey during a turbulent year in the 1970s. Margaret, the sole child of Jewish father Herb (Benny Safdie) and Christian mother Barbara, was raised in an atheist home. She shares her doubts and worries, largely concerning her changing body, her friends, her crushes, and her need for a sense of religion and belonging, as she now starts to look for God. She spends a lot of time with her queen bee neighbor Nancy Wheeler and her two other pals Janie and Gretchen. These three women operate a secret club where they reveal all of their secrets, including information about their crushes and the times of their periods. While Margaret adjusts to her bodily and spiritual transformations, her mother struggles with the move from a working art teacher to a suburban stay-at-home mother.
