Babylon 2022 is the kind of movie that believes it’s doing something profound. But at its core it is shallow. It is easy to get distracted by the glitz and incantation. Which makes almost every frame. But Chazelle is unable to properly develop his characters beyond thin writing. Which would make up their onscreen journey. Babylon impresses despite its glitzy-glitzy outlook. Which can be easily distracted by the paper-thin story below. The long-running time of the film does not help in hiding the lack of cohesion within the story. portrays events to the detriment of the film. Things do change. We forget that any of these people ever existed. While their influence remains in some form or the other. The film industry as it evolves. Produces art that leaves a mark forever. Even though actors, producers, and directors come and go like waves on the beach. This is a thoughtful assessment. But Babylon doesn’t dig deep enough.
