A young lady rents a house while going to Detroit for a job interview. However, she finds that the house is already occupied by a strange man when she arrives very late at night. She decides to stay the night against her better judgment but quickly realizes that there is much more to be concerned about than just an unexpected house guest. Keith (Bill Skarsgard), the stranger, appears to be fine despite expectations. He is eager to assist Tess with the mix-up and is young, courteous, and not particularly attractive. But is he being too obliging? What if the wine he poured for her was tainted? As long as he can, Cregger leaves these queries open. He claims that he was inspired to write the scene after reading The Gift of Fear, a non-fiction best-seller by a security expert knowledgeable in the sneaky strategies used by sexual predators. By the time he resolves the issue, the pace has accelerated, the plot has taken a turn, and nervous laughter is reverberating throughout the theatre.
