The Curse of Bridge Hollow 2022

Given that it is set in a picturesque New England town where a number of supernatural mischiefs break the sense of security, “The Curse of Bridge Hollow” could exist in the same fictional universe as “Hubie Halloween.” It appears as though Rob Riggle and Lauren Lapkus are simply stumbling over from another set to play their typical one-note supporting roles. Everything about it is depressingly familiar. Ferguson, who plays Erica, Lucas’ younger sister, in “Stranger Things,” has been a no-nonsense scene-stealer for the past couple of seasons. Her unfazed tone is similar as she attempts to persuade her father that odd thing are in fact afoot, a claim he denies because he is a science teacher at a high school who solely believes in science. Wayans uses the term “science” so frequently that you could play a drinking game with it and still pass out by the end of the first act. On the other hand, that might not be a bad thing at all. The movie, directed by Jeff Wadlow and based on a scenario by Todd Berger and Robert Rugan, isn’t very well-written and doesn’t have a compelling plot; instead, it’s a collection of exposition dumps interspersed with shrill set pieces. Characters gather around and converse with one another, explaining things like why the family came here in the midst of the school year and just who Stingy Jack is—the motivation for the yearly Halloween celebration. Lapkus, who plays the town’s mayor and puts on an absurdly thick New England accent, even has the Stingy Jack legend sewn onto her jumper. Riggle informs Wayans’ character, who plays the family’s obnoxiously nice next-door neighbor, that this is the kind of neighborhood where everyone goes all out with their Halloween decorations. While they are all awkwardly gathered at a graveyard, Sydney’s eccentric new high school buddies further explain the background of the community. Rowland, on the other hand, is given only one subject to discuss: her love of baking gluten- and vegan-free treats, a running gag that is never enjoyable and doesn’t even have a satisfactory payoff.
