The Noel Diary 2022

The Noel Diary, which is based on the same-titled novel by Richard Paul Evans, follows Jake Turner as he makes his long-awaited return to his childhood home. Evans is well-known for penning these uplifting, sentimental stories, so if he seems familiar it’s because he does, in a sense, give away what’s going to happen. The Noel Diary pays careful attention to the surroundings, unlike other of these Hallmark films, which I can tell were shot in a studio with a green screen. As Jake makes the arduous trip to his mother’s house in the winter while battling his past traumas, a sense of melancholy permeates the air. His family was torn apart by a catastrophe from the past. His mother turned her sorrow into a hoarding issue as his father abandoned them and moved away. When he was old enough, Jake departed and didn’t look back, so he didn’t speak to his mother again till she passed away. A guest shows up as he’s packing the house; she’s seeking her mother, who his parents knew. In an effort to learn more about her biological mother and the circumstances surrounding her decision to give her up, Rachel made the trip.
